The title “Look for Nothing” originates from a common phrase used in dating apps to respond to the question, “What are you looking for?” It expresses a state of continuous desire to seek without a specific purpose. In the context of the queer community, this kind of seeking is often referred to as “cruising,” which can take place online or involve searching for encounters in specific public places.

The artwork revolves around the concept of “seeking.” It features a kinetic installation that captures the essence of “cruising”. The installation includes a stainless steel panel displaying a photograph, a glass lens that moves back and forth, and a flashlight. By utilizing the physical principle of light focusing through the lens, the artist creates ever-changing patterns of light and shadows on the surface of the photograph.

When the light converges at the center of the image, the actor’s flashlight projects light from the opposite direction. This interplay of light creates a sense of movement within the artwork, blurring the boundaries between stillness and motion, and between the internal and external spaces. The lens serves as the intersection where the image and physical space converge.

The actor’s performance in the photograph depicts the artist’s intimate experiences exploring cruising locations. The artist translates such experiences into a narrative about “beasts dwelling in the windbreak forest,” described through the messaging interface of a dating app. Throughout the narrative, the artist uses erotic toys as metaphoric “beasts’ horns,” weaving them as clues throughout the story.
